Zion Tokona is set on creating more upsets in weightlifting competitions.

The 17-year-old Marist Brothers High School student, who competes in the 96kg category, has been making significant strides in the sport.

Last month, Tokona broke two records in the Junior category at the Oceania Elite International Invitational Tournament, excelling in both the snatch and total lifts.

With that achievement in the bag, Tokona is ready to take the sport by storm.

“I’m working on my position overhead because I’m recovering from some injuries in my back and wrist. Hopefully, by the time I reach the competition, everything will be solved so I can put on a good performance there. One goal for the tournament is just to break my personal best.”

Having been in the sport for less than a year, Tokona is already setting his sights on even larger competitions in the future.

“If that’s possible, then I might be in good contention for a gold medal against Samoa.”

As Tokona continues to train and recover, Weightlifting Fiji is gearing up for the upcoming Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, which will be held in Fiji this September.
