Challenges drive Vunisea athletes

April 25, 2023 1:18 pm

Athletes from Vunisea Secondary School in Kadavu have had a difficult time preparing for the Coca-Cola Games.

However, their eagerness to compete and win gold medals has made them use these difficulties as an inspiration.

A 300-meter track was what the runners trained in while field event athletes lacked a proper jump pit and stones were thrown into the sea in place of a javelin stick.

Vunisea coach, Isimeli Vananalagi says the athletes have the unwavering support of parents and old scholars which drives them.

“The parents right now are at the billating area, they are cooking and we have this messaging platform where they are just letting us know that they are cooking, they have the ice baths prepared and our management team is just running the errands for us giving the coaches and students time to prepare.”

Vananalagi adds 48 athletes will compete in the three-day meet.

Last year Vunisea Secondary won three gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
