The Deputy Prime Minister says the suspension of the opposition party last month is legal under the Political Parties Act, and addressing the conditions prescribed for a suspension means that the party can get back to parliament.

“And if it doesn’t happen there are processes within the law so there’s no such things as party being suspended and there will be a constitutional crisis.”

Prasad says this is not the first time that a political party has been suspended.

“We were suspended under the same law some years back.”

Meanwhile, political commentator Jioji Kotobalavu says it is critical for political parties to uphold the law.

“I have no authority to speak on those sensitive matters, you know it is for each political party to do what the law requires. Not just Fijifirst but the other parties as well.”

Parliament will be reconvened on June 30th for the 2023–2024 National Budget announcement.
