Dismantle work is expected to begin soon at the MV Sinu-i-Wasa 3 which currently sits at the beachfront of the Ovalau resort.

This has been confirmed by the Maritime Safety Authority’s Fiji Officer in Charge Sesoni Komaisoso.

Komaisoso highlighted that MSAF has given Venu Shipping the green light to remove the MV Sinu-i-Wasa 3 from Ovalau Resort’s beachfront.

MSAF stresses that all environmental impact assessments need to be adhered to by the shipping company when removing the derelict vessel.

“We have given them the green light, but we will come in and expect it when it reaches the tanks. We need to come and expect any oil and make sure it is removed before they cut it up.”

Shipowner Ben Naidu confirms they will dismantle the vessel in parts and take it to a recycling plant in Ba, but they are currently awaiting clearance from relevant authorities.

“We are waiting for clearances from the Ministry of Environment. Once they gave us clearance, we got the buyer ready, and everything in place. We have the logistics in place. Once we get clearance from the Ministry of Environment, we will start cutting her up and sending her to the recycling plant in Ba.”

The vessel has been an enduring sight at the Ovalau Resort beachfront since it ran aground during TC Winston in 2016 and over the years it has been a risk and hazard to residents and motorists in Levuka.
