Fiji’s demonstration of a hydrogen fuel generator is a step towards sustainable energy solutions in the Pacific.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica states that this innovative technology, showcased at an event in Lautoka last week, promises to reduce the nation’s reliance on imported fossil fuels while aligning with its ambitious climate resilience goals.
Kamikamica states that Hydrogen fuel is a game changer as it can replace fossil fuels in many areas, from power generators to fueling vehicles and vessels.
The DPM and Minister for Trade state that Fiji is making strides to invest in cleaner energy.
“This project represents a significant leap in our efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources and reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels.”
Kamikamica adds that the hydrogen fuel project sets the stage for Fiji to lead by example in the region.
He says that this project is about testing how Fiji can use a cleaner fuel, in this case hydrogen, to produce electricity.
The minister highlights that Hydrogen fuel is created using renewable energy such as geothermal power, which comes from heat inside the earth. Unlike traditional diesel, which produces harmful emissions, hydrogen is cleaner and releases only water when used.
Fiji Gas hosted the groundbreaking hydrogen dual-fuel generator demonstration at the Lautoka depot last week, in partnership with Obayashi Corporation from Japan and Halcyon Power of New Zealand.
