Fiji will soon implement a comprehensive risk and vulnerability assessment methodology that will serve as a guideline for planning the relocation of vulnerable communities.

Permanent Secretary for Environment Dr. Sivendra Michael says the guideline will be used to relocate 17 communities that are at risk from the impact of climate change.

Dr. Michael made the comments at the Fiji Taskforce on Planned Relocation and Displacement Workshop this morning.

He says the assessment methodology builds upon existing standard operating procedures, providing a framework that incorporates not only physical and environmental factors but also social and cultural dimensions.

“This methodology, recognized globally, outlines comprehensive guidance for planned climate-induced relocations, and CRVAM complements this by ensuring that our relocation decisions are evidence-based, participatory, and inclusive.”

Dr. Michael adds that this will ensure that the right approach is taken when relocating communities.

Pacific Conference of Churches, Youth Coordinator Olivia Baro says that the tool can holistically support communities, mainly those vulnerable and at risk.

Churches has been working in this space for quite a long time, especially working around the focus on non-economic loss and damage. You know, that is our identity, and the peers rightfully said that that is the last resort and to see a tool that will address that.

Baro emphasizes that youth involvement in this area will play a critical role in advocating for climate policies and helping make informed decisions.
