Cisco, a leading global technology company, is set to bolster its commitment to combating climate change by increasing its investment in Fiji.
The Managing Director of Cisco NZ and Pacific Islands, Garrett Heraty, expressed pride in the company’s partnership with the University of the South Pacific (USP) for research dedicated to understanding the effects of climate change on oceans and coral reefs.
Recognizing the urgent need to address the challenges posed by climate change, Cisco has been actively engaged in initiatives that contribute to environmental sustainability.
“So it’s known that the ICT industry is responsible for between two to 4% of greenhouse gases, however, we have the ability to impact more than 15%. So, there’s a huge opportunity. And I see it’s an obligation on the IT sector to really chase after that 15%. It is an opportunity to leverage technology to have a significant impact, both from a sustainability perspective as well as from a social perspective.”

Heraty says Cisco’s commitment to the Pacific in the fight against climate change extends beyond research collaborations.
He says through its corporate social responsibility programs, Cisco has facilitated training and capacity-building initiatives, empowering local communities to tackle climate-related challenges effectively.
