The building permit approval process has been inefficient with delays stretching beyond 140 days and in some cases even years.

To address these critical issues, the government is implementing a comprehensive overhaul aimed at significantly enhancing transparency and efficiency within the construction sector.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa has emphasized the pressing need for this reform, citing the outdated procedures and bureaucratic obstacles that have historically encumbered the building and construction industry.

The current system’s inefficiencies are well-documented with lengthy approval times causing substantial delays and hindrances for developers.

Central to this reform is the introduction of a new online platform designed to substantially expedite the approval process.

Nalumisa has acknowledged the significant challenges faced by businesses and government agencies due to the existing complex and time-consuming procedures.

“Frustrations and challenges faced by the business community have not fallen on deaf ears. This process are the backbone of our infrastructure development and urban planning directly impacting the wellbeing of our communities.”

Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica has voiced strong support for these reforms and has also stressed the critical role of digitalization in fostering economic growth in Fiji.

“The customer or the investor will only need to load the document once. As soon as its loaded, all the agencies can see the documentation so you can individually start processing the application simultaneously as opposed to before where you had to wait for the handoffs of the relevant documents.”

The new system will standardize approval processes across all local councils, thereby eliminating inconsistencies and minimizing the potential for errors.

This modernization is expected to markedly enhance the overall experience for developers and accelerate the progression of construction projects.
