Villagers along the Nasealevu and Savusavuitaqa road access in Macuata have questioned the government about the decrease in the initial budget allocation for the road upgrade project in the area.
Nasealevu Headman Solomoni Tubou claims that while the work continues, the prime minister’s initial announcement of $275,000 has now decreased to $100,000.
He says despite the start of work by PWD, the long-ignored road standard remains a concern.
“The main issue for us villagers is just the road being fully constructed so that the bus services can be provided to both villagers; that is our main concern.”
He claims that residents and schoolchildren are still experiencing difficulties in accessing the Nasealevu to Savusavuitaqa road.
“Normally we pay a driver $120 hire every week during a school term that is every Sunday. But most times, every Friday, schoolchildren will walk down from the school to the village.”
Another villager, Kasiano Vusonilawe, says the drop in the budget allocation can somehow affect the work.
“We wonder why the budget was dropped because the road work is in progress and they dropped the allocated amount. So we are asking why it was dropped since we badly need the road and decided to drop the amount.”
FBC News has also reached out to the Commissioner’s office in the Northern Division regarding these claims and concerns but has not received a response yet.
