Pacific Ministers unite to strengthen disaster risk response

Ministers responsible for Disaster Risk Management from across the Pacific gathered for the 1st Intersessional Meeting in Manila, Philippines, aiming to enhance climate action and disaster resilience efforts in the region.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka opened the session where he highlighted the importance of maintaining regional solidarity.

He adds the current challenge is to build on this momentum and support each other during disasters while committing to resilient development pathways for Pacific communities.

Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat’s Deputy Secretary General Esala Nayasi emphasizes the importance of collective action.

Nayasi also highlights the increasing frequency of disasters and the need for integrated approaches amid uncertainties around funding sources.

As the region faces existential climate threats, the meeting aims to enhance coordination and build on the momentum from the recent Pacific Forum Leaders’ discussions and the mid-term review of the Sendai Framework.

Pacific nations also hope to leverage this political will to strengthen national efforts and promote resilience.
