The refurbishment of Dreketi Market, which is part of the People’s Coalition Government’s immediate development plan in Macuata, has brought relief to the vendors in the area.
It was identified during the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad’s first official visit to the Northern Division early this year.
The upgrade includes the construction of 30 stalls, washrooms, and a water tank.
The vendor, Ateca Disere, says they expect a boost in their earnings with the improved facility.

“For quite a long time, we have been in need of an upgrade in our market… as our stalls were in a deteriorated state—there are leaks when it rains, and sunlight would directly shine on us. So, with the upgrade of the facility, we are grateful for the assistance by the government.”
Another vendor, Losana Sewasewa, has expressed their appreciation to the government of the day, as they have heard their plight after several futile requests over the past years.

“I believe that the market is an avenue to generate income for most of us. It helps us meet the needs of our families. For me, I have been a single parent for six years; my husband has passed away. I am the sole breadwinner in my family, and this is my only source of income.”
The vendors are also happy that they can now sell at night as light has been provided at the facility.
Dreketi Market was severely affected by Tropical Cyclones Winston and Ana, and it has been in a deteriorated state ever since and has worsened over the years.
The People’s Coalition Government allocated $100,000 for the upgrade of Dreketi Market in the 2023–2024 National Budget.
