Panel discussion yesterday on reporting sustainable development goals at USP
During a panel discussion yesterday on reporting sustainable development goals, journalists highlighted the significance of asking the right questions and understanding the realities on the ground.
Australian Broadcasting Corporation correspondent Lice Movono stressed that this approach is crucial for effective reporting on achieving the SDGs.
“You need to know what the realities are on the ground; you need to be doing your research.” “You can’t be a journalist that gets given your questions by your bosses, by the Wansolwara editor, or by your lecturers.”
Movono also discussed the impact of repealing the MIDA Act of 2010, which has allowed journalists to report without fear.
Dialogue Fiji Executive Director Nilesh Lal highlighted that the media in Fiji is having what he described as the “honeymoon period.”
“But we will see how the relationship evolves as we progress.”
Fijian Broadcasting Corporation multimedia journalist Kirisitiana Uluwai emphasized the importance of responsible reporting, including the need for balanced reporting based on facts.
“We can approach them with any issues that we find, whether it’s through reports or through what people say, but that does not necessarily mean we write anything and everything under the sun to bring anybody down.”
By highlighting the progress being made towards achieving the SDGs, student journalists were encouraged that they could inspire action and foster meaningful change.
